The Mindful Eater's Workshop© is designed for individuals
who diet, or maintain mental lists of good and bad foods for the purpose
of attaining physical fitness, who find that over time that in doing
so, they not only have developed a tense and unpleasant relationship
with food and their body, but that dieting and maintaining mental
lists of good and bad foods has resulted in WEIGHT GAIN, NOT WEIGHT
LOSS.
Dr. Pyatt's workshop will guide the participants through critical aspects of her book, solidifying the principals contained within, allowing workshop participants to be able to view food, and their body in a new way. Dr. Pyatt will encourage participants to participate in the optional Eat-Together© experience which is designed to allow participants to become skilled at maintaining mental alertness when eating, and to help participants experience the state of satiety. The price of the optional Eat-Together© experience is not included in the price of the workshop. At the close of the seminar, we will meet together at the Hardy House, one of Dr. Pyatt's favorite fine dining restaurants which where you can enjoy an option of menu items. With others, you can learn the art of Mindful Eating, the key to fitness of mind and body.

It is Dr. Pyatt's goal that participants will gain the
skills necessary to create a relaxed and pleasant relationship with
food, and a healthy body.
MINDFUL EATER'S WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Day One:
9:00-9:30 am Greetings & Introductions
Dr. Pyatt will introduce 'The Steps' and encourage participants to
welcome one another. Dr. Pyatt will share her experiences which lead
her to "Get Fed Up!"
9:30-10:45 am Step One: Recognize You Exhaustion!
Participants will review step one, and discuss Dr. Pyatt's questionnaire:
"Is Food Preoccupation Running Your Life?" Participants will be challenged
to look honestly at the impact of dieting. Has dieting led to positive
changes in your life? Has dieting led to weight stabilization? The
question becomes: "Are you truly exhausted?"
10:45-11:00 Break
11:00-12:00 Step Two: Reject the Cultural Myths That Make you
Diet and Gain Weight
Dr. Pyatt recognizes that we are all the product of the society in
which we live. Emphasis will be on noticing the impact our society
has on our beliefs about our bodies, about what is fit, and about
how to be in control with food.
12:00-1:15 Lunch Break
Participants are encouraged to dine together, and to begin sharing
stories, make connections, and most of all listen and learn from each
other.
1:15-2:15 pm Step Three: Decide That You Are Good Enough Today
to Love Yourself Today
Has self-loathing and putting off life resulted in control of your
weight? Practical tips will be provided on how to actually start living
today, even if you're dissatisfied with your body. Participants
will experience the power of realizing that loving oneself now
can be an active choice. In living in the present, and nurturing oneself
today, (with or without imperfections), we are capturing the most
powerful weight loss tool possible: self-love. A discussion among
participants of the Self-Denial Inventory will be encouraged. Dr.
Pyatt will also help participants deal with the complex self-esteem
issues which place individuals at risk for the development of severe
and even life threatening eating disorders.
2:15-3:45 pm Step Four: Learn to Experience, Trust, and Enjoy
Hunger and Satiation
Turn our insight about ourselves into action. Discover the freedom
of letting go of mental lists of good and bad foods, and embrace the
reality that in doing so, you are finally on the path toward a fit
body. Participants will learn the tools necessary to dissect physical
hunger from emotional eating. Dr. Pyatt will discuss the powerful
impact of dissociated eating which leads to bingeing and emotional
grazing on food. Participants will understand the impact of "guilty
eating" on dissociated eating, and how discarding mental lists of
good and bad foods is a necessary step to undue the damage done by
dieting. This is integral in overcoming our disturbed eating patterns.
It is the hope of Dr. Pyatt that participants will incorporate this
goal into their evening eating plans. For those who are interested,
Dr. Pyatt will offer an evening 'Eat-Together', where participants
will dine together in smaller groups, and the principles of this step
will begin to be discussed and employed.
3:45-4:00 Break
4:00-4:30 Open discussion
Dr. Pyatt encourages questions, comments, and feedback. Day one evaluation
forms will be made available.
5:00-7:00 Optional 'Eat-Together'
Participants will have the option of participating in this gathering.
We will be working together to share our experiences of hunger and
satiety. We will discuss our reactions to food while we eat, and discuss
why it is hard to stop eating at times. This is an experiential group,
with the goal being to help participants become mentally alert while
eating, and of course, to enjoy the act of eating without guilt.
Day Two:
9:00-10:00 Step Five: Straight Talk About Exercise
Where have you been and where are you now? Dr. Pyatt discusses the
impact our view of ourselves has on our ability to engage in exercise,
and emphasizes the importance of re-defining exercise in a way that
actually reduces stress, as critical to long-term weight control.
The "Where Have You Been, Where Are You Now Survey" will be reviewed
together.
10:00-10:45 Step Six: Get Your Doctor on Your Weight Loss Team
Participants will discuss and become aware of the medical issues that
can cause long-term weight gain. Dr. Pyatt will discuss the issue
of accessing appropriate medical care, and will provide help to participants
in being prepared to interact with the medical community in a way
that will lead to necessary tests being performed when indicated.
10:45-11:00 Break
11:00-12:00 Step Seven: Learn to Wait to Lose Weight
The harsh reality is that weight loss does take time. How do we manage
this reality in our "drive-through" society? Dr. Pyatt's "What to
Do While You're Waiting: Tips for Mindful Eating" will be discussed.
12:00-1:00 Step Eight: Break Through the Secrecy
When we are secretive, we believe we have something to hide-something
shameful. If we binge, we do so in hiding, like hunted animals. In
this important step, we begin to realize that we are not alone with
our problem, and that it is in releasing ourselves of shame that we
can begin to give and receive. In realizing that your out-of-control
eating is not a behavior you freely choose, but an almost unavoidable
consequence of dieting, you begin to loosen the grip that food preoccupation
holds on your life. Advice for managing reactions from friends and
family will be given. The principles of this step will be put to use
during the lunchtime 'Eat-Together'.
1:00-2:30 Optional 'Eat-Together'
A second opportunity to participate in the Eat-Together will be encouraged,
but is optional. In this gathering, we will focus on Step Four, but
emphasis will also be placed on Step Eight: "Break through the Secrecy".
We will discuss the importance of releasing ourselves from our shame
about our desire to eat. We will seriously consider that all people
have a biological and psychological drive to feel satisfied from their
experience of eating.
2:30-3:30 Step Nine: Re-define Your Life: What's More Important
to You Than Dieting?
Participants will be encouraged to take serious notice of their lives,
the community in which they live, and the surrounding world. Is there
something distorted about placing our weight as our top priority or
concern? The participants will be assisted in the challenge of 1)
Rediscovering their Interests and Values 2) Evaluating Current Relationships
and their Impact 3) Exploring possibilities for gaining New Experiences
and Knowledge. The surprise? It is by focusing also on the world around
us rather than our weight that we are led to long-term health.
3:30-4:30 Step Ten: Give to the Next Generation: Preventing Eating
Disorders and Obesity in Children
One indication of the devastating effects of our culture's conflicting
messages about weight and food is the massive and increasing number
of overweight children and children with eating disorders. Dr. Pyatt
will review her seven key recommendations for interacting with children
in a way that will protect children's ability to detect hunger and
satiation, and maintain self-esteem, which are necessary tools for
maintaining a fit mind and body.
4:30-5:00 Wrap Up
Evaluation forms will be provided. Questions, comments, feedback,
and ideas are strongly encouraged.
